Flight is proud to play a part (all puns intended) in bringing the Flat Rock Playhouse production of 12 Angry Men to the historic Henderson County Courthouse on Main Street. The recently renovated courthouse is the perfect setting for this play based on the 1954 telefilm starring Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb.

On “lawyers and judges night” it was obvious that many of the lawyers had not visited the courthouse since the renovation. I overheard one astonished lawyer exclaim over the new dark out window shades that replaced the unadorned plywood. Another mentioned the fine new upholstery on the chairs. All agreed the courthouse never looked this great when it was in use.

But the superb acting was the main conversation that night. Each night after the play, some of the cast will head to Flight to discuss their role with patrons.

The play quickly sold out which led to a one-week extension. Now through July 25. Click here for ticket availability and pricing/> Flat Rock Playhouse.

The Governor, Ms Beverly Eaves Perdue and her husband, Bob Perdue, came to the Western Governor’s Residence for a mountain weekend over Memorial Day.
The evening began at Cam and Sally Boyd’s house with cocktails on the terrace overlooking the most magnificent mountain vista in Hendersonville. We then caravaned to Flight for an outrageous dinner. Bev had halibut with pineapple and bacon. We drank Merry Edwards Pinot Noir and Shug Pinot, of course. I have no idea what the white wine was because…why drink white??

Then, we were treated to a tech rehearsal of “For The Glory” at the Flat Rock Playhouse. We’ll need to go back and see the full version, but we all cried anyway. Kudos to Vincent and the great voices!

We were too tired to take a pantoon out on Lake Summit and see the beautiful full moon, but it was a stellar evening nonetheless.

Readers flew “the Land of the Sky” into the top spot in the Small Cities category for the first time this year. A walk along the streets of Asheville will prove why it deserves this honor, from the Art Deco buildings seen all over the city (including the town’s city hall) to the more than 50 galleries representing every medium. Reader Mark Flowers, of Alexander, N.C., explains, “Asheville’s creative scene runs from the visual art, the handmade craft arts, the music arts, down to the amazing small brewery arts. It’s a total package that brings me downtown whenever I am near.” American Syle magazine.

And cuisine arts, too!

Did you receive the May newsletter with the $25 frequent flier certificate in it? (If not, email me at flightwoodgrill@mac.com and I’ll send you one pronto.)

There wasn’t room for all the qualifications about using the certificate on the certificate itself.

The certificates apply to entrees only, not appetizers or bar plates or alcohol (ABC Board forbids it.)

Suppose both you and your spouse receive the certificate. You may only use one per Monday night, so plan to come twice! Suppose your friends received a certificate and want to come with you. That’s fine, as long as they are paying with separate credit card, separate checks. You can see the intent here, but there are always some really creative types who think of unusual ways to use the certificate, so we reserve the right to redeem or not redeem.

We’re looking forward to seeing you!

“Things we hate about restaurants”

1. When they charge top dollar for a single glass of wine and its too warm.

2. When the server chats you up so much, you don’t have time to talk to your dinner partner.

3. When the restrooms are messy or worse, not clean.

4. When all the men go to the restroom 6 times a night and you know they are stopping in the bar to “check the score.” (Well, that’s not the restaurant’s fault except that they have a tv at all.)

5. Music so loud that I have to yell at the person next to me or music is so low, I can hear the conversation two tables over.

So, what are your complaints about restaurants? Would love to hear back!

After this, we must talk about something more positive!

Andrew, surely you know yourself well enough to know that nothing is ever salty enough or cheesy enough for you. Again, chef thinks it’s perfect the way it was prepared. That’s why you won’t find salt and pepper shakers on the table, but some people like lots of freshly ground pepper. Enough said.

“Waiters who say one of three things:

‘Hi, my name is X and I’ll be your waiter tonight.’
‘Have you dined with us before?’
‘Everything on the menu is great.’

So, what would you like them to say, Andrew Knowlton?

Is it because we’re in a small town where people actually request their favorite server? Where servers recognize their “regulars?” What is wrong with introducing yourself? Asking if you’ve ever dined with us before is a great way to make a connection i.e. “So, then you may have had the tuna that is our signature dish?”

And why, although my spouse does it all the time, would you ask the server what to order? He doesn’t know you can’t stand mushrooms or your aversion to anything the least spicy. Obviously, if the chef has it on the menu, he thinks it’s really good! Unless you’re one of those people who goes to a seafood restaurant and orders steak, or a Thai restaurant and orders a burger. Chef has put those on the menu for the “one in every crowd.”

Instead, ask the server what the signature dishes are or the specials of the day. Then, he or she doesn’t have to hear your whole life story to help you order dinner.
