Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher in their column “Tastings” in the Wall St. Journal, talked recently about their favorite 2007-2008 New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.
One of my favorites, Mt. Difficulty, was deemed very good/delicious. “Exceptionally clean, vibrant and alive. Seems to leap from the glass with goosberries, melon, pineapple and other fruits.” Well, frankly, I don’t taste all that, but I like it alot. ($18.99)
We recently did a weekend away for Marilyn Bailey’s birthday. (It had a zero in it) She’s a nationally known jeweler who lives here in Hendo. Marney McClung and Ken Shelton, big fans of New Zealand, brought Oyster Bay. Somehow, amazingly, it was not drunk over the weekend and made its way into my bag to bring home. It was amazing! We owe Ken and Marney one back. $12.50 rated good/very good. “Just plain fun. Clean and fresh, with plenty of kiwi and a particularly lively finish. Lacks much intensity and depth, but makes up for it in charm and fresh fruit.”
Kiwi?
Another favorite, Kim Crawford Wines 2008, was also listed. $15.99 Very good/delicious and received Best of Tasting. “Classy and well-made.”
Drylands Estate Wines 2007, $14.99 very good/delicious
Isabel Vineyard 2007 $15.99 very good/delicious “Warming, friendly and happy.”
Brancott (Montana Wines) 2008 $10.99 Very good. “Pure wine, pure taste, pure joy.” Doesn’t that make you want to run out and buy it? I’m always on the lookout for that great bottle of $10 wine. This might be it.
Vavasour Wines 2007 (Awatere Valley) $16.29 Very Good. “Tastes true. Juicy with ….grapefruit/green-pepper finish. Proud wine. Repeat favorite.” I might buy it just to taste what green-pepper finish tastes like.
Allan Scott Wines and Estates 2008 $13.99 Good/very good. “Think of sorbet; cleansing and pure.”
Mount Nelson (Tenuta Campo di Sasso) 2007 $19.99 Good/Very Good. “Restrained and calm and therefore perhaps better with food.”
Summer and fish on the barbie, eh?
